Conformity Vs Individuality in George Orwell’s 1984 Essay Sample

George Orwell’s 1984 is a novel that deals with the theme of individuality vs. conformity. In a totalitarian society, individuals are forced to conform to the will of the state in order to avoid punishment. Those who rebel against the state are tortured until they conform. Winston Smith is a character who represents the individual in a society that values conformity above all else. He eventually succumbs to the will of the state, but only after a long and arduous struggle. In the end, Orwell shows that the individual cannot win against the state.
