Overall, the essay provides a comprehensive overview of the struggles black women have faced in America throughout history. While the author does provide a number of examples to support their argument, I felt that at times the writing was dense and difficult to follow. The essay “Advantages and Disadvantages of Gun Control” adequately presents both sides of the contentious debate on gun control in the United States. It argues that, while guns may have some benefits (such as self-defense and deterrence), they also have many negative consequences (including death, crime, and suicide). The essay also points out that the Second Amendment of the US Constitution protects the right of Americans to bear arms, and that this right has been upheld by the courts on many occasions.
The essay “Depiction of Industrial Capitalism in The Film Modern Times” does a great job of highlighting the negative aspects of industrial capitalism during the Great Depression. The author provides specific examples of how the characters in the film are exploited by industrial capitalism, and how the workers had no voice against the “hierarchy of supervisors and managers.” The international division of labor is also discussed, and how it caused hardships for those who could not afford imported goods. The film ends on a hopeful note, with the Tramp and the Gamine looking forward to a better future.
