In 1847, the Whitman massacre occurred which was a tragedy that happened at the Whitman mission. This event led to national attention to the struggles of the pioneers heading west. The passage of a bill to organize the Oregon Territory in 1848 was the outcome of the massacre. Even though the Whitman family was killed, their legacy led to more emigrants taking the chance to go West.
